Winner of the WILLA Award for Historical Fiction. Shortlisted for the SaskPower Fiction Award, Saskatchewan Book Awards 2014.
Set in 1906, Dollybird tells the story of pregnant Moira, banished by her embarrassed family to the Canadian Prairies. The term ‘dollybird’ meant either ‘housekeeper’ or ‘prostitute’ in the 1900s west. Twenty-year old Newfoundlander Moira Burns is determined to survive, and even thrive, in small town Ibsen, despite the stories that circulate about her past.
Join artist Joely BigEagle-Kequahtooway and Buffalo People Arts Institute in Val Marie for buffalo hide tanning workshops and storytelling activities that support awareness and cultural sensitivity.
This is your chance to participate in a unique opportunity to help scrape and prepare a hide while learning the history of the buffalo and its significance to Plains Indigenous people.

Common Weal Community Arts Respond to Racism program explores how the arts can provide tools to address racism by supporting education, bridging, and dialogue in communities across Southern Saskatchewan.
This programming is possible due to generous funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board Artist in Communities Residencies grant program, SaskCulture Inc., thanks to the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation, and with the support of our project partners: South West District for Culture, Recreation & Sport, Parks Canada, and Prairie Wind & Silver Sage.
